Inn the Ground

Inn the Ground is a nine-room bed and breakfast in rural Oregon. Its design draws inspiration from the surrounding agrarian community, embracing simple forms and single-slope roofs reminiscent of Carlton's agricultural sheds. Reflecting the local architecture, the building design creates a sense of familiarity and belonging for guests, making them feel immediately comfortable within its walls: a building of low pretense, authentic to our region.

The building was designed to be recessive to the land. Though 10,000 square feet, two-thirds of it is underground allowing it to present itself to a visitor much smaller than it actually is. The Earth sheltered design stabilizes building temperature reducing space heating and cooling needs.
