The conceptual design for Xi’an City’s “Happy World Project” in Shaanxi, China was envisioned as a 150-acre neighborhood with 20.5 million square feet of built area.
The idea for Xi’an City was to develop a neighborhood with a range of densities, including walk-up townhouses, mid- and high-rise apartment housing, and a signature tower in the center of the development. This idea is in stark contrast to the large, dense, homogeneous developments that are common in this part of China and built as a response to soaring demand for housing.
Aggressive sustainability strategies were developed for the reduction of resource consumption, including:
60% reduction in district electricity use
Integration of several natural-gas powered CUP’s (Central Utility Plants)
70% reduction in district water use
60% reduction in district carbon emissions (equivalent to eight coal-fired power plants).
