When Smarsh relocated their corporate office headquarters to Portland, they hired GBD to modernize their offices for a highly cohesive, branded workspace within a reasonable budget. From programming through interior design and build out, GBD worked closely with Smarsh to develop their new headquarters office—a local feel with a global focus.
Smarsh’s 44,000 sq. foot office is located on three full floors of the Pacific Center building. Inspired by the New York City (the company’s original headquarters location) subway system, designers incorporated this concept throughout the space with finish selections, color palette, subway map graphics, and the iconic Helvetica signage.
The eighth floor houses reception and serves as the “public” floor with conference, training, and break rooms of varying sizes. The other two floors are employee-focused; with smaller conference rooms, informal huddle spaces and coffee bars. One of the biggest employee features is the “Smarsh Park”—an unoccupied space becomes indoor park with flexible/outdoor furnishings, AstroTurf rug and lawn games.
Designers made the space feel like Smarsh, by incorporating their bright blue and yellow color palette. The blue was used throughout at each of the workstations, incorporated in custom glass dividers. Glowing yellow huddle rooms work for small, informal meetings; breaking up the open office environment with a splash of color, while also breaking down the scale of the larger spaces.
Completed in December 2014, Smarsh’s new office is a model for a creative, collaborative and open workplace.
