Schnitzer Steel Industries (SSI) is one of the nation’s largest recyclers of scrap metal, a leading provider of used and recycled auto parts, and a manufacturer of finished steel products. With their corporate headquarters in Portland, SSI offices were spread throughout the city; in 2012, they hired GBD to consolidate all of their offices into one location.
SSI’s new 40,000 sq. foot office is located on two floors at KOIN Center. A new interior stair connects the floors in the building’s atrium.
Designed to reflect characteristics of the metals industry, the large floor plate is divided into neighborhoods, identified through color and metal finishes. Patterned glass partitions further divide the neighborhoods.
Multiple, informal gathering areas supplement the enclosed conference rooms, while four outdoor terraces are furnished and further provide gathering space. A large café will serve as the office’s social hub.
Ceiling ‘clouds’ will be used in lieu of a typical suspended acoustical tile ceiling to avoid the ‘Class-A office space’ feel. Use of reclaimed wood flooring and wall paneling will give the space a homey feel.
SSI moved into their new space in late 2013.
