Bar MingoPortland, Oregon
Bar Mingo is adjacent to Caffé Mingo, a long-popular restaurant in northwest Portland. The bar functions as a hangout for people waiting for a table at busy Caffé Mingo, as well as a stand-alone restaurant. The overall theme for the space is “antique Asian meets contemporary Italian.”
GBD strove to create a unique identity at Bar Mingo—one that would not overshadow its partner restaurant. The owner of Bar Mingo fell in love with an antique Asian gate, so much so that the design team built the interior palette around this gate. Designers chose teak wood for the bar top and wall paneling to tie-in the gate, which is displayed behind the bar. The large-scale, floral-print fabric—an archival design by Swedish designer Josef Frank—was used to establish the color theme for the lounge.
Other finishes and features include: custom-designed LED crystal chandeliers by Flux Lighting in Seattle, and white marble table tops for a contemporary, Italian feel.
The 1,837 sq. foot bar was completed in April 2008.
